Although one was a theoretician and the other a fiction writer, both have written narratives in which the fragile transition from inhuman to human States is endlessly scrutinized. In both their approaches, an implicit analogy is drawn between the history of the individual and the history of the human species as a whole; moreover, in both approaches the permanent threat of a regression towards pre-human States (in individual and/or collective behaviour) stands out as the very characteristic of the human species.
Les rois de carnaval dans le théâtre de Shakespeare : le cas de Jules César et d'Hamlet - In his plays about power, Shakespeare presents us with a series of disturbing, imaginative associations between a monarchy which he often stages as quasisacerdotal and thaumaturgic (Richard II, Macbeth) on the one hand, and, on the other, the popular rites and festive customs of Elizabethan England, where kings and queens are elected for a short period and then derisively uncrowned. Such carnivalization of the figure of the king inscribes the royal function within a transient, even subversive pattern, poles apart from the essentialist, absolutist ideology of power, where the king is God's deputy on earth. This article studies various mock king figures such as Jack Cade (2 Henry VI), Falstaff (1 & 2 Henry IV), Julius Cæsar and Hamlet through their links with the Roman feast of the Lupercalia for the former and clowning and saturnalian reversal for the latter.
